Don’t pet it too long.

Identify the issue and stop doing it. It sounds like you’re forcing an interaction the cat doesn’t want and it’s defending itself. If you try and pick it up and it stiffens, let go immediately. If you’re holding it and it wants down, let it go instantly. If you’re trying to hug it or bring your face close, which many animals perceive as threatening, stop it.
